Constitutional Reform
In 'The Coalition: our programme for government' ©Crown Copyright, the new Government has set out its intentions for political reform. Some of them, if they do become law, could bring significant changes to elections and electoral registration. The proposals include:
- Establishing five year fixed-term Parliaments, with the next General Election being held on the first Thursday of May 2015
- Holding a referendum on changing how we vote in elections; the current, First-past-the-post system or using the Alternate Vote system. The Deputy Prime Minister has announced that this will be held on 5 May 2011 and will be combined with the local elections
- Reducing the number of Parliamentary Constituencies from 650 to 600
- Introducing a 'Power of Recall' to allow electors to force a by-election where their MP is found to have engaged in serious wrong-doing
- Speeding up the introduction of Individual Registration, which will see an end to the traditional household form that only need to be signed by one person per household. However, the Government has not given any details about how soon these changes will be brought in
Further information about these and the Coalition Government's proposals can be found in the document mentioned above.
