Becoming a parent

Becoming a parent is a big step, but it can also be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. We will celebrate this and other milestones in your journey as a parent, such as your child’s first birthday or first day at nursery, so that you feel supported.

When you find out you are going to be a parent, there will be lots to think about and plan for, but there will be time to get ready.

Your Personal Advisor can help you start to think about what you will need and what might need to change as you prepare for life with a child.

They will help you update your Pathway Plan and support you in thinking about your home, finances, and support networks.

We will also think about those professionals who you know, are part of your life and who you would want to be part of your future. This might be professionals who can help you learn about being a parent.

Many care-experienced young people worry that their baby will be removed from their care, because they have been in care themselves. This is not true. We will help you to be the best parent you can be.

If your Personal Advisor does have any worries about your baby’s safety, they will always talk to you about this and will help you plan for how we can help you and your baby be safe. If it is felt that you need help from Social Care your Personal Advisor may make a referral, but they will discuss this with you and support you through any meetings.

We can also support you to stay in college or work as well as being a parent.

If extra help is needed, we will work with you, together, to make sure your baby is safe and loved.
