Extra Help for Young People with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities
If you have a disability, learning difficulty or health condition, extra support is available. There is extra help available so you can succeed in education, training, and employment.
This can help as it can provide:
- support that works for you, so that your education or training fits around your need
- extra resources and equipment, from laptops and specialist software to travel support
- personal support, such as a mentor, learning support worker, or a study coach
- equal access, college, universities, and training providers must make reasonable adjustments, so you are not disadvantaged
National support
- Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) for university study costs. More about the Disabled Students Allowance.
- Access to Work for job-related support costs. Visit the Access to Work website.
- EHCPs can continue up to age 25 if you remain in education.
- National Careers Service - have specialist advisers for people with disabilities. Get in touch with the National Careers Service
- Colleges and universities have SEND or disability teams
Local support

- Rotherham College and other local providers - Each has an Additional Learning Support Team to give you tailored help. Ask your PA for more information.
How to access:
- Tell your Personal Advisor if you need extra support. They can help you with applications.
- Contact your school, or university’s SEN or Disability Team to ask about the help available.
- Speak to SENDIASS for advice if you are not sure what support you can get.
- Apply directly for DSA (Disability Students’ Allowance) if going to university or Access to work if you are starting work.
