Privately Rented Accommodation

You may choose to rent privately or share a home with friends. Your Personal Adviser (PA) can help you search for safe, affordable places to live.

Where to search for private rentals

You can look for properties on:

  • Rightmove
  • Zoopla
  • OpenRent
  • SpareRoom
  • YMCA
  • GOV.UK: Private renting

Your PA can help you use these websites and understand what to look for.

Contacting a landlord

When you find a property you like, you can phone the landlord or send an email. You can use this template:

Subject: Property enquiry – [Property address]

Dear [Landlord’s name]

I am writing to ask about the availability of the property at [Property address]. If it is still available, I would be grateful for more information about:

  • whether you accept tenants who receive benefits
  • viewing arrangements
  • required deposits or upfront payments
  • who is responsible for utility bills
  • the application process and how long it usually takes

Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

[Your name]

[Your phone number]

Before you view a property

Speak to your PA before arranging a viewing. They can:

  • give you tips on what to look for
  • explain the renting process
  • tell you what documents you may need to provide

Your PA can also explain Deposit Guarantee or Bond Schemes, which can help if you cannot afford a deposit.

If you secure a property

Your PA will:

  • check you have all the documents you need
  • support you with moving in
  • help you understand your rights as a tenant
  • explain what to do if repairs are not done or if you have problems with your landlord
