University Accommodation
If you decide to go to university, there is extra support available for you as a care leaver.
We will help with the cost of accommodation during term time and holidays. Most universities also offer their own support, although what they provide can vary.
What you can expect
- Accommodation Many universities guarantee a room in halls of residence for care leavers. Some offer year‑round accommodation so you do not have to move out in the summer.
- Extra money Most universities offer a Care Leaver Bursary or scholarship. This can range from around £500 to £5,000 a year, depending on the university.
- A named contact You will usually have a named person at the university who supports care‑experienced students. Their job title may be Care Leaving Officer, Student Support Adviser or Widening Participation Officer.
- Extra support Some universities run welcome events, mentoring schemes or drop‑ins specifically for care leavers.

Things to know
- You will not be left without somewhere to stay in the summer. We will help you return home or find accommodation during holidays.
- Your PA can help you with bills, budgeting, bursaries and grants for care leavers.
- Every university offers different levels of support. Always check what is available before applying. Your PA can help you contact the university.
- On your move‑in day, your PA will make sure you have food and a cleaning kit.
National support
- Unite Foundation Scholarship - Offers free accommodation for care leavers at certain universities. Visit the Unite Foundation Scholarship website.
