What documents and identification will I need?
You will need various documents and forms of identification to do things like applying for housing, applying to college, claiming benefits, opening a bank account, and having ID to vote.
You will need some important documents to apply for housing, college, benefits, a bank account, or to vote. If you do not already have them, your Personal Advisor (PA) will help you get them.
Key documents your PA can help you get
- National Insurance number
- Passport or ARC card (Application Registration Card for people seeking asylum)
- Birth certificate
- Provisional driving licence (if you need it for work, study or training)
If you are an unaccompanied asylum‑seeking child, we will support you with immigration documents and help you get legal advice.
Keeping your documents safe
- We can store copies for you if you ask.
- Once you have the original documents, it is your responsibility to keep them safe.
- If you lose originals, your PA can help you replace them, but you may need to pay replacement costs.
- If you do not have a safe place to keep documents, talk to your PA and they will help you find a solution.
Using your ID
Your PA will explain how to use your ID for voting, travel, and work checks and will support you through any applications or checks you need to complete.
