What is Prevent?

Prevent is a key stage in the Governments Counter Terrorism Strategy (CONTEST).

It aims to safeguard and support children, young people and adults who may be at risk of being radicalised or drawn into terrorism or extremist ideologies. Prevent addresses all forms of terrorism and extremism. Radicalisation is the process by which a person is persuaded, influenced, or groomed into adopting extremist views or supporting extremist groups. What does this mean for you?

Employees in front line roles and those who deliver services are well placed to recognise children and adults who may be susceptible to radicalisation. By identifying those at risk and seeking support at an early stage, you can help make sure they don’t go on to harm themselves or others.

“Notice, Check Share” Process

We ask Partners to follow the “Notice, Check, Share” Process.

Notice

There is no single route to radicalisation. However there are certain signs and traits that may increase susceptibility to being radicalised.

• Anger, feelings of injustice or an obsessive desire for change.
• Mental Health or Personal crisis. Becoming isolated or withdrawn.
• Support for extremist causes, symbols, or propaganda or use of hostile, hateful or extremist language
• Engagement with extremist material online, including sharing propaganda or joining extremist forums

Check

Discuss safeguarding concerns with trusted colleagues and safeguarding leads, carefully assess the information and context, and seek advice from Counter Terrorism Police via 101 or the Local Authority Safeguarding or Prevent teams where appropriate.

Do you still have concerns someone is on a pathway that could lead to terrorism? – Make a Prevent/Safeguarding referral.

• Contact can be made to the Counter Terrorism Policing Prevent Team via 101 or Email: preventsouth@ctpne.police.uk, your safeguarding lead should assist in making the Formal referral using the National Prevent Referral form
• Wider safeguarding concerns around children should also be referred to Rotherham Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH)  01709 336 080.
• And for adults, via Adult Care Customer Contact Team 01709 822 330

Support Available

If the referral is assessed as being suitable , Prevent has a specialist support programme called “Channel”

Channel is a multi-agency, voluntary, confidential programme that supports people who may be at risk of being drawn into terrorism. It can provide a wide range of tailored support such as mentoring, counselling and help with education and employment.
