Enhanced Biodiversity Duty Reporting

Under the Environment Act 2021 and revised Section 40 of the Natural Environment and Rural Communities (NERC) Act 2006, Councils must proactively consider and take action to further biodiversity objectives and publicly report on progress.

The Enhanced Biodiversity Statutory Duty came into effect in 2023, and requires the Council to:

  • set and deliver biodiversity objectives and policies
  • write a Biodiversity Report including activities and BNG reporting up to 1 Jan 2026 and be published 12 weeks after this date and then subsequently every 5 years afterwards covering actions, outcomes, and future plans.

A copy of the Council's Biodiversity Duty Report 2024 - 2025 is available below.

The Council will next be required to publish a further Biodiversity Duty Report within 5 years, covering the period up to 1 January 2030.
