Due to emergency arrangements introduced to support social distancing, it will not be possible to register a death in person until further notice.
Deaths will be registered by telephone.
The hospital, hospice and doctors surgeries will, where possible, send the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD) direct to the register office. They will need to ask you for the name and contact details of the person who will be registering the death. It will also be helpful if you can provide details of the funeral director, if you have already appointed one.
Where the MCCD has been sent directly to the register office, please wait for the registrar to call you. The registrar will take details of the death and will pass on the document which allows the funeral to take place directly to the relevant person.
Where the doctor has given you the MCCD please telephone the Register Office on 01709 823542 (option 2) so that we can advise how you this can be delivered to the Register Office.
Before delivery, please ensure you add the following details, clearly, on the MCCD envelope:
- name of the person who will register the death
- a contact number (and email address) for the person who will be registering the death
- the name of the funeral director (if known)
Once we have received the MCCD we will call you to complete the death registration. The registrar will take details of the death and will pass on the document which allows the funeral to take place directly to the relevant person.
Certificates cost £11.00 each. Please note that a maximum of two certificates can be requested at this time. These will be posted to you following the registration.
