A child taking part in a performance or activity under a Licence must be supervised at all times by a local authority approved chaperone unless they are under the direct supervision of their parent or a person who has legal parental responsibility.

The chaperone is the key person to whom the child looks to for guidance, protection, clarification and support.  He or she is the point of safety a child can turn to and rely on should the need arise.  The chaperone has a major part to play in ensuring that the child’s experience is enjoyable and beneficial.

Who can apply to be a chaperone?

Any person (18 years or above) may apply to the council to be approved as a chaperone.

The criteria for approval is as follows:

  • Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service Check
  • Completed Chaperone Application Form
  • A good understanding of the role and responsibilities
  • Satisfactory references
  • Completion of online safeguarding training
  • Satisfactory social care checks

Timescales

Apply in good time. It will take up to 12 weeks to process your application.

Charges

Please note that a fee is payable for the Enhanced DBS check plus an administration charge.  If you are a volunteer, the check will be free.
