The Industrial Heritage of South Yorkshire in the 1960s and 1970s by Peter Watson

I was born in Beverley, East Yorkshire and I attended Liverpool College of Art in the 1960s where I studied Graphic Design. Whilst visiting my future wife’s home at Wentworth near Rotherham I was inspired by the industrial landscapes of the area and this led me to produce a series of paintings of pits, cooling towers, canals, railways, spoil heaps and blast furnaces. I was particularly struck by the drama of the landscape in comparison to the serene farmland of East Yorkshire.

My first ever exhibition of paintings was held in Rotherham Library in the 1980s and this work was seen by an official from the National Coal Board South Yorkshire Area who happened to have an interest in art. This resulted in a commission to produce paintings of 14 local collieries. This was at a time when the pits were beginning to be closed and it was felt that it would be a good idea to have an historical record of their surface workings. Eventually after the closure of the collieries the paintings were collected together and presented to the National Mining Museum in Wakefield. I have recently revisited the sites of some of these pits and where possible taken photographs from the same position as the paintings.

Some of the other paintings are of iconic structures of South Yorkshire such as Tinsley Viaduct and Rotherham Power Station cooling towers and the complex at Parkgate which were such a feature of the area.

It is pleasure to return to Rotherham Library after 40 years. Most of the paintings are here reproduced as prints and hopefully there will be a lot of interest from people who worked in the area or remember the landmarks which have mostly disappeared from the landscape.
