Independent living is an important part of preparing for adulthood. For many young people, it means developing the skills, confidence and support needed to live as independently as possible, whether that is in their own home, with family, or in supported accommodation. For young people with special educational needs and/or disabilities, thinking ahead and understanding the options available can help make this transition more positive and manageable.
This section of the Transitions Guide provides information to help you and your young person plan for independent living in adulthood. It covers accommodation options, developing independence skills, accessing adult social care, carer’s assessments, and money and benefits. Together, these areas can support your young person to feel safe, supported and empowered as they move towards greater independence.
