Smart Library Terms and Conditions

Smart Library customers agree that:

  1. They are physically capable of accessing and exiting from Smart Libraries without assistance from library staff.
  2. They will report to library staff any change to their health which may prevent them from leaving the premises unassisted.
  3. They will keep their library card and PIN for their own personal use and not to lend the card or disclose the PIN to anyone else.
  4. They will not allow third parties (e.g., couriers, contractors, or friends) to enter the library if they don’t have an access card. Provision is however made for children to accompany a smart library member.
  5. They will remain alert.
  6. They will keep windows closed.
  7. They will not smoke cigarettes or e-cigarettes in any part of the building.
  8. They will supervise and be responsible for any children in their care whilst using Smart Libraries and not leave any children for whom they are responsible alone in the library.
  9. They will follow safety instructions given by the library staff in the case of an emergency.
  10. They will familiarise themselves with the layout of the building including safety exits, fire assembly point, visual alarms, and location of the emergency phone at the Smart Library.
  11. They will promptly evacuate the building in case of an emergency.
  12. They will not attempt to extinguish fires unless they have been specifically trained by the Council to do so. The priority is on safe evacuation of the building.
  13. They will refrain from smoking, vaping or lighting any naked flames at any time in the library.
  14. They will be respectful of other users and report any antisocial behaviour to library staff.
  15. They will treat the library and its property with respect.
  16. The use of CCTV to monitor activities throughout Smart Libraries (with the exception of toilets).
  17. The processing of their personal information (and those of children in their care) in accordance with applicable laws from time to time in force. A passport style photograph will be required for all smart access customers.
  18. They will abide by the usual rules of the library during Smart opening hours.
  19. They will not consume drugs or alcohol whilst using the library.
  20. They will follow the established procedures for borrowing and returning books and other library items.
  21. They will be responsible for their own valuables.
  22. Customers are required to have been a member of Rotherham Library Service for at least three months and hold full membership before being able to apply for smart library access.

By registering as a Smart customer you agree to abide to these guidelines. You are also signing to say that you are aware of the emergency evacuation procedures and are able to evacuate the building without assistance. If the Library Service considers that you are not adhering to these guidelines, this may lead to your Smart status being removed.
