Deadline extended as Shanks provides help to Dearne Valley through community projectsPublished Tuesday, 20th December 2016
The deadline for local community groups to apply for funding to help with environmental projects has been extended to 16 January.
This is to give more people a chance to benefit from the special fund which last year helped with an allotment group for people with learning disabilities, cookery sessions for children in foster care, and a volunteer horticulture training programme to help the unemployed back into work.
The facility is a partnership between BDR (Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham councils) and 3SE, a consortium of Shanks and Scottish and Southern Energy. It processes around 250,000 tonnes of waste a year from 340,000 homes across Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, turning it into useful products rather than sending it to landfill. More than 40 jobs have been created in the Dearne Valley.
All three projects received funding from Shanks’ Corporate Social Responsibility Fund which has been developed to support communities surrounding the award-winning waste treatment facility at Manvers.
The fund supports up to four local projects a year through volunteer time and/or financial funding and is now inviting applications for 2017.
Shanks Community Education Liaison Officer, Abi Cox, said: “Wherever we are located, our aim is to be a good neighbour and make a positive contribution to the local community. In addition to making more from waste, we want to help improve the communities we serve more broadly and we hope that initiatives such as those we have introduced around Manvers contribute to making them happier and healthier places to live.”
Eligible projects can apply for up to £3,000 a year if they are within 3.5km (as the crow flies) of the Manvers facility, and up to £1,000 a year if they are further away but still within Barnsley, Doncaster or Rotherham council areas.
Projects can apply for 90% funding, with groups providing 10% matched funds. In addition, groups can apply for volunteer time to support their projects up to 30 hours per year, providing where possible they match the volunteer hours.
Funding is available for a range of environmental projects that will benefit the broader community and the maximum number of people. These could include the creation of community orchards, food waste minimisation sessions, or funding for walking bus equipment.
Applications from local groups including schools should be in by Monday 16 January and successful projects will be notified by the end of January.
