Andrew Bramidge, Executive Director of Regeneration and Environment at Rotherham Council said: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic events at Rother Valley Country Park over the Bank Holiday weekend.
And want to express our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of the young person who has lost their life in such devastating circumstances. Our thoughts are with them at this incredibly difficult time.
“We would ask that people respect the privacy of the family and avoid speculation. We are working closely with South Yorkshire Police and partner agencies who are leading the response, and we will continue to support them as needed.
“As a mark of respect, Rother Valley Country Park is closed today. We will provide an update on its reopening in due course.
“We urge everyone visiting sites with open water across the borough to follow the guidance and stay out of the water unless it is in designated, supervised areas.”
