Rotherham Council’s Cabinet is set to consider proposals for over £4.1million of grant funding for a range of capital works for schools across the borough when it meets on Monday 6 July 2026.
The proposed programme will support improvements to school buildings, maintain sufficient mainstream school places and help expand provision for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
It follows confirmation of Department for Education capital funding and builds on the achievements delivered through the 2025/2026 schools capital programme.
Over the next year, the maintained schools condition programme will see over £720,000 of Department for Education capital grant, alongside carry-forward funding, invested into priority schemes such as toilet upgrades at Blackburn Primary, heating replacements at Broom Valley Primary and Badsley Moor Primary, roofing works at Rawmarsh Rosehill Junior School, boiler replacements at Sitwell Infants, as well as electrical testing and urgent minor works around the borough.
Meanwhile, £3.4million from the High Needs Capital Allocation will support the SEND programme for a range of mainstream accessibility grants, special school accessibility improvements, inclusion base development, and special school growth and alternative provision.
The programme also includes redevelopment works at Newman School to build a new block at the Whiston site and refurbish the listed corridor - funded through the Department for Education’s Strategic School Improvement Capital Budget arrangements as well as allocation from the Council. This adds to the Council’s previous capital investment which saw the building of a new primary block and hydrotherapy pool offering specialist areas for children with SEND.
Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services, Cllr Victoria Cusworth, said: “Investing in our schools is essential to giving children and young people the best possible learning environment where they can achieve their aspirations.
“We’ve already seen investment into our schools and SEND provision over the last few years, and the impact this is having on our children and young people across the borough. This new programme will help us maintain and further improve school buildings, ensuring there are enough school places where they are needed, and continuing to expand support for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities within their communities.”
During the last financial year, the Council completed works across 16 maintained schools including repairs and improvements at Herringthorpe Primary, Eastwood Village, Rawmarsh Aspire, and Todwick Primary schools.
Alongside this, the 2025/2026 SEND capital programme delivered accessibility grants to 36 schools and completed new resource provisions at Thurcroft Junior Academy, Winterhill School and Maltby Manor Academy, as well as new modular classrooms at Kelford School and a second site of Elements Academy.
