Jon Stonehouse, the New Strategic Director of Children's Services.

The new Strategic Director of Children’s Services for Rotherham Council has been named as Jon Stonehouse.

Mr Stonehouse is currently the Corporate Director of Children, Education and Communities at City of York Council, and has previously worked in Children’s Services at Salford City Council.

He will join Rotherham Council in the next few months, subject to completion of references.

Sharon Kemp, Chief Executive of Rotherham Council said: “We are very pleased to appoint Mr Stonehouse to this integral position at Rotherham Council.

“The last few years has seen significant change to Rotherham’s Children’s Services leading to our “good” Ofsted rating earlier this year. Alongside our excellent educational attainment, this is a good time to be coming to Rotherham and joining our senior leadership team.”

Leader of the Council, Cllr Chris Read added Mr Stonehouse’s skills, experience, passion and energy shone through in the interview process. He said: “Rotherham’s recent Ofsted judgement of “good” provides a great platform to welcome the new Strategic Director of Children’s Services and we continue to keep up the momentum on improvement whilst addressing budget challenges in what is an increasingly tough financial climate. I look forward to working with Jon as part of our Rotherham team to do just that.”

“I am very pleased to be coming to Rotherham Council to join them at this very exciting time in their improvement journey,” added Mr Stonehouse. “A lot of great strides have been taken over the last three years to turn around children’s services in Rotherham and I am delighted to be joining a team of officers who have been integral to making these changes happen. I look forward to coming and meeting the team soon.”

With more than 25 years’ experience of working with children and young people, Mr Stonehouse has been at York City Council since 2014. In York he oversaw the redesign of early help services for children and families and the development of new arrangements for school improvement and achieved an overall “good” outcome with outstanding features in an Ofsted inspection in 2016.

Before this he was Deputy Director of Children’s Services at Salford City Council.

Here Mr Stonehouse successfully led the development and delivery of Salford’s Safeguarding Action Plan in response to a 2010 Inspection and government improvement notice.

Mr Stonehouse will join the senior management team at Rotherham Council with responsibility for a range of services including social care, inclusion, school improvement and early help.
