RTPI president visits Rotherham plannersPublished Monday, 17th September 2018
The President of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), John Acres, visited members of Rotherham Council’s successful planning team on Friday (14 September).
As part of his wider visit to the Sheffield City Region on 13 and 14 September, Mr Acres took time to visit Riverside House to personally congratulate officers and managers in the planning section.
Rotherham’s Planning Service was named overall winner in the category for Local Authority Planning Team of the Year at the 2018 RTPI Awards for Planning Excellence held in May.
Cllr Denise Lelliott, Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, said: “Our planning team does a great job and it was fantastic for them to get national recognition with this prestigious award, followed by a personal visit from the RTPI President.”
Bronwen Knight, the Council’s Head of Service for Planning, added: “Following our recent award as RTPI Best Local Planning Service we invited Mr Acres to visit Rotherham, meet the team and showcase the work we do.”
John Acres, President of the Royal Town Planning Institute, said: “The RTPI Award for Best Local Planning Service is a testament to Rotherham Council’s modern, efficient and flexible planning service which has achieved a high level of community satisfaction. The service is excellent.
“I am impressed by the planning team’s digital management system which has modernised planning processes. Their approach is enabling development and creating the right conditions for growth and regeneration in the region.”
Rotherham’s award was based on planning performance, cost effectiveness and progress on the Local Plan, along with very positive customer feedback.
Colin Blackburn, Assistant Director of Housing, Infrastructure and Planning for Sheffield City Region: said: “We were delighted to welcome John Acres to the Sheffield City Region Heads of Planning group meeting. The area as a whole is very proactive on planning issues, with work to update local plans and implement recently adopted plans underway across all nine districts in SCR.
"We are also committed to working together wherever this can add value for local authority planning teams, and all our districts are working hard to deliver projects that help the city region to grow and develop as well as strengthening core their planning services.
“John also recognised the achievements of Rotherham Council, for their excellent performance, positive customer feedback and timely adoption of their local plan which resulted in them being awarded this year’s RTPI Local Authority planning team of the year, and the work being undertaken to roll out this best practice across the city region.
“It was beneficial for us to hear directly from John about some of the planning issues that other areas are facing at the moment, and to understand what the national priorities are for the RTPI.”
