A social worker from Rotherham has been selected as a finalist in the Social Worker of the Year Awards 2018 as a result of their outstanding work with children and families.

Lucy Jackson, social worker with Rotherham Borough Council’s, Children and Young People’s Services has been nominated for the Children’s Social Worker of the Year prize and will find out if she has won at an exclusive awards ceremony which will take place in London later this month.

Lucy is one of 93 finalists across 16 categories and the winners from each category will compete against each other to be named the “Overall Social Worker of the Year 2018.”

The prestigious awards ceremony is the leading celebration of its kind in the social care sector, and recognises the achievements and successes of the profession’s most innovative and dedicated social workers.

Michelle Lee-Izu, Corporate Director - Children’s Services (England) at award sponsor Barnardo’s, said: “This award recognises the very best work in children’s social care and someone who consistently goes above and beyond to make a positive difference to the lives of the children, young people and the families they support. To reach the final of the Social Worker of the Year Awards demonstrates a high level of professionalism and is an outstanding achievement. This is something to be very proud of.”

After qualifying from Sheffield Hallam University with a first class degree just three years ago Lucy has made a huge impact on both the families she helps and her colleagues. So much so, they felt compelled to put her forward for the illustrious award.

Lucy has helped to improve the lives of hundreds of Rotherham families through her work. One family in particular who were struggling to cope with an increasingly difficult situation spoke about how things turned around once Lucy became involved. Through Lucy’s intervention they got the help and support they needed, transforming the future for their family.

Cllr Gordon Watson, Deputy Leader of Rotherham Council and Cabinet Member for Children and Young People and Families Services said: "This is a wonderful achievement for one of our very talented social workers. Lucy began her practice here in Rotherham in 2015 and for the past three years has established herself as an excellent social worker.

“Lucy was nominated for, amongst other things, leading standards across the service and her dedication and passion in making sure every child has the best start in life.

“To reach the final is an outstanding achievement and something to be very proud of, well done Lucy!”

The awards were judged by leading influencers in the social work sector including Chief Social Workers Isabelle Trowler and Lyn Romeo, Children’s Commissioner for England Anne Longfield OBE and Maris Stratulis (England Manager, British Association of Social Workers). People who have received support from social workers were also represented on the judging panel.
