Good practice tips for recruitment and retention of Parish Councillors
Tips for parish councillor recruitment and retention:
- Parish Council hosting regular events to which local residents are invited, can be used to identify potential future Parish Councillors.
- Parish Council’s offering an informal procedure for residents who are interested in becoming a Parish Councillor to find out more about the role and what it entails.
- Offering a flexible, supportive role allowing Councillors to be involved in what they want rather than the whole of Council business and accommodate changes to home life.
- Offering the opportunity to “buddy” up with a more experienced Councillor to learn about the role.
- Promoting a positive, respectful environment and foster good working relationships.
- Ensuring enough resources are allocated to Parish Councillors for training and skill building. Training for new Parish Councillors is available via Yorkshire Local Council Association.
