Rotherham Gateway is a long-term regeneration and transport project that will be delivered in phases. This page explains how the project is funded, who is involved and the steps required before construction can begin.
The Station Quarter is the first phase of Rotherham Gateway
The first phase of Rotherham Gateway is the Station Quarter, which includes proposals for a new mainline railway station, tram-train stop and integrated transport hub at Forge Way.
This phase will help create the foundations for wider regeneration, improved transport connections and future investment across the borough and the wider South Yorkshire region.
Funding has been secured for the current stage of development
Development of the Station Quarter is being supported through funding provided by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA).
SYMCA has committed £11.38 million from the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) programme to support development of this phase of the project. The Department for Transport approved the release of this funding in January 2026.
This funding supports the work needed to develop the project, including business case development, technical studies and detailed design activities.
Rotherham Council is preparing a Full Business Case
Rotherham Council is progressing work on a Full Business Case for the Station Quarter.
The Full Business Case will provide detailed evidence to support a future investment decision. It will assess the benefits, costs, risks and deliverability of the project and demonstrate how the scheme supports local, regional and national priorities.
This work includes:
- Detailed design development
- Technical and engineering assessments
- Economic and financial appraisal
- Transport planning
- Environmental considerations
- Delivery and risk planning
A final investment decision will be required before construction begins
Completion of the Full Business Case is an important milestone in the development of the project.
The business case will be used by funding partners and decision-makers to determine whether the project should proceed to construction. A final investment decision will be required before any construction activity can begin.
The project is being delivered with partner organisations
Rotherham Gateway is being developed in partnership with a range of organisations.
This includes collaboration with:
- South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA)
- The Department for Transport
- Network Rail
- Rail industry partners
- Neighbouring local authorities
- Businesses, universities and other stakeholders
Working with partners helps ensure the project aligns with wider transport, regeneration and economic growth plans across South Yorkshire and the North of England.
Delivery will take place in phases
Rotherham Gateway is a long-term programme that will be delivered over several phases.
The Station Quarter is the first phase and focuses on improving transport connectivity through the delivery of the proposed railway station, tram-train stop and transport hub.
Future phases will support wider regeneration, development opportunities and economic growth linked to the wider Don Valley Growth Corridor.
The project is progressing towards an opening date of around 2030
Detailed planning and development work is already underway.
Subject to funding approvals, statutory processes and successful completion of the Full Business Case, the ambition is for the new railway station and tram-train stop to open around 2030.
Timescales will continue to be reviewed as the project progresses.
