In this moving poetry reading to accompany the Days of Laugher, Days of Pain exhibition, Yorkshire poets Ian Parks and Sarah Wimbush present poems from their new collections to explore the 40th anniversary of the year-long strike that tore the nation apart.
Ian Parks was born in Mexborough. The son of a miner, he was active during the strike. A poet and academic, he is editor of Versions of the North: Contemporary Yorkshire Poetry and the Selected Poems of Harold Massingham. His own Selected Poems 1983-2023 is published by Calder Valley Poetry. He runs the grassroots Read to Write poetry group in Doncaster.
Sarah Wimbush grew up in Doncaster. Her first poetry collection, Shelling Peas with my Grandmother in the Gorgiolands was published with Bloodaxe in 2022. She has recently had poems published in PN Review and The Morning Star. Her second collection STRIKE (Stairwell 2024) commemorates the 40th anniversary of the 1984-1985 miners' strike through poetry and photographs.
Attendees are encouraged to visit the Days of Laughter, Days of Pain: The Miners' Strike in Rotherham, 1984-85 exhibition upstairs in the museum before making your way to the Drawing Room on the ground floor of the museum for the poetry reading at 1.30pm.
Please note that one ticket admits two people.

Please note the cafe will close at 3.30pm and the museum will close at 4pm.
