Christmas family fun in RotherhamPublished Tuesday, 29th November 2016
Rotherham residents are in for a treat with lots of family fun during the festive season at various Christmas themed events taking place around the borough.
On Saturday 3 December All Saints’ Square will host Festive Wonderland, a free event for the whole family from 10.30am to 3.30pm with Father Christmas waiting to greet you in his Grotto.
Watch out for the two mischievous elves as they entertain visitors with comic interaction while creating amazing balloon sculptures and be sure to say hello to Basher and Crasher, the fun loving, hoovy groovy reindeer as they make their way around town in their self-propelled sleigh. Craft Corner and Bear’s Den will also be on hand to entertain the children with their Christmas craft-making activities. Visits to see Father Christmas with a gift is £2.50 per child.
A Late Night Christmas Shopping event takes place on Thursday 8 December with businesses and shops open until 8pm, with exclusive discounts, offers, musical entertainment, mulled wine, mince pies and plenty of festive cheer! Rotherham's all-new Asian bazaar will also be launched in the outdoor covered market between 10am and 8pm with music, entertainment and food.
Meanwhile, Father Christmas and his little helpers will be visiting Riverside Library to tell Christmas stories and give out gifts to lucky boys and girls, on Friday 9 and Wednesday 14 December from 4pm to 5pm. The event is £2.50 per child. Places must be booked in advance.
On Saturday 10 December, Rotherham town centre steps back in time for A Victorian Christmas with a day of free traditional entertainment and activities from 10.30am until 3.30pm.
Entertainment includes Dr Phantasma’s wonderfully colourful and exciting Ten in One Show with fire-juggling, whip-cracking, ladder-balancing, amazing sights, laughs and thrills - appearing in Rotherham for the very first time!
Look out for the slightly grumpy yet hilarious duo Scrooge and Scratchit and prepare to be surprised and delighted by the Festive Funnels bringing a festive glow with cheeky chat, games and play.
Plus, with Victorian Bunco Booths, period dancers, music and a Chapel on the Bridge Open Day, there is something for everyone at this wonderful Christmas event.
The annual Thrybergh Country Park Christmas Fair returns on Saturday 10 December from 11am to 4pm. See the exciting arrival of Father Christmas on his speedboat at 11am. Visit his Grotto for a small fee of £2.50 per child. There will be market stalls, face painting, festive food and drink, Christmas decoration making and festive games for all the family.
On Saturday 17 December, the Magical Reindeer Experience brings Christmas spirit to Rotherham town centre. Meet the real reindeer and Father Christmas at this truly magical event with the acrobatic elves ready to spread fun and mischief. The parade sets off at 12.45pm, travelling around the town before entering a viewing area outside Boots until 3pm.
Rotherham shoppers can once again benefit from FREE parking on Saturdays and Sundays in all council-run on-street bays and off-street car parks in the run up to Christmas. It includes Christmas Eve on Saturday 24 December and New Year’s Eve on Saturday 31 December (as well as free parking every Sunday as normal).
Libraries around the borough will also have various Christmas activities taking place. Swinton Library have the Kilnhurst Christmas Choir performing on Monday 19 at 4pm, Christmas Craft activities on Tuesday 20 December at 10 am and Rhyme Time Christmas Party on Wednesday 21 December.
Rawmarsh Library and Customer Service Centre will host various activities from 1 to 24 December. There will be pictures to colour and word searches to complete, Santa’s Trail to find the missing presents and a Santa colouring competition with a prize for the winner. On Wednesday 21 December a Christmas craft activity session will take place on various craft activities with a visit from Santa (mince pie included!) from 10.30am to 11.30am.
Thorpe Hesley Library will have Christmas crafts and stories on Tuesday 20 December, 2pm to 4pm, Friday 23 December, 10.30am to 12noon and Saturday 24 December, Story Galore 10am to 12noon.
