The Government has given the go-ahead to a multi-million pound upgrade of the A630 road which links Rotherham and Sheffield.

The funding means commuters and businesses will soon be benefiting from quicker journeys and better connections in and out of Rotherham, after it was announced £42m is to be spent upgrading the A630, or Parkway, as it is known locally.

Acting as a key route between Rotherham and Sheffield while providing access to the M1, it is one of the busiest roads in the region. The investment will transform the existing road into a dual three-lane carriageway, markedly increasing capacity on the road and, in-turn, boosting customer journeys.

Junction 33 on the intersecting M1 will also benefit from carriageway widening and resurfacing to reduce congestion and cut carbon emissions which feeds into Rotherham Council’s Clean Air Zone plans.

The Advanced Manufacturing Park and Innovation District which is located alongside the Parkway will also benefit from the works. The site is seeing continued expansion and the funding will ensure an improved infrastructure is in place to support these developments.

The Council will be working alongside contracted partners and in close liaison with Highways England and Sheffield City Council on the project which is due to start in the next few weeks.

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and the Local Economy, Cllr Denise Lelliott said: “We are delighted to have been granted the funding to make the necessary upgrades to the Parkway. The road is vital in connecting Rotherham with Sheffield and links to the M1.

“The works will make a real difference to thousands of commuters’ journeys in the region every day and will also feed into our ongoing work to improve the air quality in the borough.”

Work is scheduled to start in the coming weeks and expected to be finished by Summer 2022.
