First Annual Rotherham Summer Games
Published Wednesday 25th August 10
Children and young people from across Rotherham will have the chance to take part in their very own Olympic style games in preparation for 2012.
The first Rotherham Summer Games will be held on Friday 27 August, 10am - 3pm at Herringthorpe Stadium and will run every year up until the 2012 games.
This free action packed day, aimed at 5 - 15 year olds, kicks-off with an opening ceremony by the Mayor of Rotherham and will feature a wide variety of Olympic themed sporting activities which will test speed, strength, stamina and flexibility. All participants will receive a T-shirt and medal just for taking part.
The range of fun events on the day include: Jamaican Bolt, Polish Power Pull, Mega Madagascan Medley, Tai Try Challenge, British Ball Pool Blitz, Driving Range Challenge plus many more activities to try out including the ever popular Kangoo Jumps boots.
Jackie Thornhill, Sports Development Manager, said: "The response to this event has been absolutely fantastic with over 150 young people already signing up to take part. It looks set to be a great day out for all the family and become a firm favourite in Rotherham's events calendar."
The games are part of the highly popular Mega Active Summer programme which delivers a comprehensive range of sporting and cultural events to the borough throughout the school holidays.
"This is a great way to close the summer holidays and end what has been another hugely successful Mega Active Summer," commented Jackie.
Rotherham Council has teamed up with several partner organisations to make the event possible including Rotherham United Community Sports Trust, Rotherham Hockey Club, Rotherham Hawks Basketball Club, Carnegie Camps, DC Leisure and Groundwork Dearne Valley.
Places to take part in the games are limited and are allocated on a first come, first served basis. To book your place contact the Sports Development Team on 01709 822453.
