University graduation for Rotherham youngsters

Published Tuesday 3rd May 11

More than 100 Rotherham children donned their caps and gowns to graduate from a very special university.

They became the first to graduate from the Children's University in Rotherham during a ceremony at Sheffield City Hall.

The children aged between seven and 14 have all taken part in a range of exciting learning activities outside of their usual school programme - including a rock school, art classes, fundraising for 'Help for Heroes', a learning trip to Valencia, cooking, dancing and lots more.

The graduates, dressed in caps and gowns, walked on stage to receive their certificates from the Chancellor of the Children's University, Martin Kimber, at the ceremony which was also attended by the Mayor of Rotherham, Councillor Rose McNeely.

Three children - Michael Hood, Emma Leeson and Silethokuhle Sibanda - also received honorary awards from the Children's University for their special contribution to their own communities.

The Children's University is a national organisation offering young people, aged seven to 14, an exciting and innovative programme of high quality learning opportunities outside school hours. It is set up across the UK with 'learning destinations' in various town and cities.

Rotherham's Children's University was piloted in Rawmarsh and is currently being rolled out across the rest of the borough for all seven-14 year olds in Rotherham to enjoy.
