New farm opens at Rother Valley Country ParkPublished Friday, 10th July 2015
If you go down to Rother Valley Country Park today - you will be in for a big surprise as you discover a family of four-legged friends settling into their new homes.
Park staff have been working hard over the past few months to get things ready for the launch of their latest visitor attraction, the new Station Farm.
Set in the award winning 750-acre country park, the farm can be accessed on foot or by hopping on the popular miniature train to the park’s play area.
Park Manager Ian Dixon said: “The idea for Station Farm came about from talking to our customers, who were keen to see animals at the park. The variety has been chosen for their suitability to the area by a local farmer and a Park Ranger is always located on site for customers to ask questions and to check on the animals.”
The free* attraction offers the opportunity to see, stroke and feed a variety of animals at their pens. Food for the animals is available for £1 a bag.
If you’re lucky, you’ll be in time to see the new lambs, in addition to the Zwartbles and Jacob sheep. Or for something a little more unusual you can get up close to the sheep’s distant cousin, the Llamas, as well as feed a variety of goats – the British Alpine, Anglo Nubian and Pygmy.
Rotherham Council’s Advisory Cabinet Member with responsibility for Leisure and Green Spaces Cllr David Roche said: “Our Country Parks are one of Rotherham’s greatest offerings, giving visitors both local and from further afield the opportunity to sample a little tranquil peace of the country with water, fresh air, space and an abundance of wildlife.
“They are also a hive of activity, bringing people together, and making a positive contribution to our local economy; and I’m confident this new facility will further serve to contribute positively to these areas.”
Station Farm will be open from 10.30 am every Saturday and Sunday, and every day in the school holidays, weather permitting. To find out more go to the Rother Valley Country Park web pages.
