Waste treatment facility at Manvers

The new waste treatment facility at Manvers which is revolutionising how waste is managed in South Yorkshire has been shortlisted for three prestigious national awards.

The MRW National Recycling Awards recognise excellence and innovation in recycling and resource management in the waste industry.

The facility at Manvers opened last July and treats leftover waste from almost 350,000 households in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, turning it into a useful resource, such as fuel, digestate and electricity, rather than sending it to landfill. The facility has created more than 40 new jobs in the Dearne Valley.

The project is a finalist in three categories – Private-Public Sector Partnership, Best Energy from Waste initiative, and Communications. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in London in July.

The facility is the result of a partnership between BDR (Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham councils) and 3SE, a consortium of Shanks, the international waste-to-produce business and SSE, one of the UK’s leading energy companies. It diverts up to 96.5 percent of the waste it receives away from landfill, in addition to saving the equivalent of 114,000 tonnes of CO2 every year.

Once at the facility, any remaining recyclable materials are extracted, before the remaining non-recyclable material is turned into a fuel which is used at the Ferrybridge Multifuel 1 facility in West Yorkshire. Once there, the fuel releases its energy to produce low carbon electricity which is supplied to the National Grid.

Thousands of local schoolchildren have taken part in hands-on workshops learning about recycling and what happens to waste after it is thrown away. "It’s a Rubbish Adventure" is a joint year-long project between Shanks and the Magna Science Adventure Centre, supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering.

On behalf of the BDR Partnership, Director of Regeneration and Environment at Doncaster Council, Peter Dale, said: "The waste treatment facility at Manvers has truly transformed the way we deal with waste in Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham, and we are delighted with this national recognition."

Contract Director at Shanks, Colin Fletcher, said: "We are delighted to be nominated for three awards at the MRW National Recycling Awards. The nominations are a testament to our team, facility and relationship with BDR Councils and SSE. We look forward to the ceremony and in the meantime remain focused on delivering excellent services from this innovative project."
