Communities and Relationships
Cllr Gill Garnett was elected to Rotherham Borough Council in May 2024 and appointed to the role as Armed Forces Champion in January 2026. Cllr Garnett, is the proud daughter of an Army Veteran, who served in The Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) for over 10 years.
Alongside serving as a Borough Councillor, Cllr Garnett’s day-to-day role is working within a busy A&E Department at Rotherham Hospital where she also stands as the Veteran Aware Champion for the Trust. Cllr Garnett is delighted to be appointed as the Armed Forces Champion and to take on this challenging and varied role to represent the Borough’s Armed Forces Community which includes being the key link / contact between the Council and the Armed Forces community across Rotherham, working alongside local Armed Forces and other lead charities and key partner organisations, chairing the Rotherham’s Armed Forces Community Covenant Group meetings and working with Armed Forces Champions in neighbouring local authorities (Barnsley, Doncaster and Sheffield).
Rotherham Armed Forces Community Covenant Group
All the signatories to the Covenant form the membership of the Rotherham Armed Forces Community Covenant Group which meets quarterly to identify key issues affecting the Armed Forces Community. They work together to ensure that any failings affecting the armed forces community are challenged and changed. The Group also works together to develop good practice in implementing the Armed Forces Covenant across Rotherham.
The Covenant Group works from a detailed action plan if anyone would like a copy this can be requested by using the contact us form below:
