WHAT IS SUPERVISED FAMILY TIME?

The 1989 Children’s Act requires local authorities to support contact (Family time) with birth families, unless it is not in the best interest of the child. Supervised Family time ensures the physical and emotional wellbeing of a child. It also aims to assist in the building and sustaining positive relationships between a child and their family members.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR FAMILY TIME

Family Time can be difficult and confusing for many children and young people and depending on their age, some value in knowing times and dates upfront to prepare while others may experience anxiety and struggle with this. You will be the best person to establish their wishes and feelings and find out what works best for them.

Depending on the age of the child you will need to send items for changing, feeding and a familiar favourite toy.

It is advisable to use a separate changing bag just for Family time to ensure families cannot obtain any of your identifiable personal information.

Please send a communication book so you and the Family members can share up to date information about the child.

THE DAY OF FAMILY TIME

On the morning of every session, the Fab Team supervisor will ring all attendees to see if they are safe and well to attend the Family time session.  We will let you know of any changes or cancellations.

As Family time can be difficult for some children and young people wherever possible we ask for you to transport to and from Family time, handover arrangements can be discussed with the Fab supervisor to meet your individual needs.

SUPPORTING THE CHILD AFTER FAMILY TIME

  • Try not to be judgmental or criticise birth parents or family members for their words, behaviours, or actions.
  • Find ways to help the child settle again if upset and understand why this can be a difficult process.
  • Give the child a safe environment to express their feelings after Family Time and reassure them that it is ok to feel the way they do.
