Accessing Your Social Care Records
If you are a care leaver or have ever been in care, you have the right to:
- be heard and taken seriously
- get independent support from an advocate
- see your social care records
- be treated with respect and honesty
These rights are protected by law (Children Act 1989, Care Leavers Regulations, and data protection law).
You can get support from the Rights 2 Rights Service. They will help you with anything that’s important to you—whether it’s understanding decisions, getting advice, or making sure your voice is heard.
They will listen to your concerns and help sort things out. They also want to hear what has gone well, so we can keep doing the things that work for you and other young people.
You might want to understand more about your time in care—what happened, why certain decisions were made, and who was involved.
As a care leaver, you have the right to ask for your social care records.
