Rotherham Council is taking forward plans to create a new specialist school for children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) difficulties in the borough.

The new school, which has been named Elements Academy, is based at part of the former Dinnington College Campus, off Doe Quarry Lane in Dinnington and is on course to open for the new school year, starting in September 2022.

It will be the only one of its kind in the borough and will meet the growing need for specialist provision, underlining Rotherham Council’s on-going commitment to bolster places for children with special educational needs and meet increasing demand.

SEMH issues can include a diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), attachment issues, a diagnosed mental illness such as depression or anxiety and sometimes includes mental health issues experienced by children and young people with autism spectrum conditions.

Ethos Academy Trust has been appointed to run the school.

Ethos Academy Trust undertook a statutory consultation between 4 April – 27 May 2022 to seek the views of local stakeholders in relation to whether or not they agree that the Secretary of State for Education should enter into a funding agreement with the Ethos Trust Academy to open the new SEMH School at Dinnington.
