University Technical Colleges (UTCs)

The law requires the Local Authority to advise parents and carers of other opportunities for education that are available to them outside of normal transition points i.e., Reception, Year 3, and Year 7.

This does not mean that you are required to move your child from their existing school if this remains the best option for them.

There are other opportunities for education starting in Year 9 at University Technical Colleges (UTCs). UTCs are set up by universities, colleges and businesses and specialise in technical subjects linked to regional and national recruitment employment pipelines. At GCSE they offer a similar curriculum to a typical secondary school, including basics of English, Maths and Sciences as well as their specialist subjects.

All schools have a statutory duty to secure impartial careers guidance for all Year 8 to Year 13 students to inspire young people to fulfil their potential and to make them aware of all opportunities open to them. We strongly recommend that your child discuss their options with a Careers Adviser in their current school.

Please find below information about those closest to the Rotherham area. More information is available at www.utcolleges.org

There are two UTCs in Sheffield (Olympic Legacy Park and Sheffield City Centre) as well as Doncaster UTC and the Engineering UTC in North Lincolnshire all of whom accept applications for 13-19 year-old students. Their aim is to ensure young people achieve excellent GCSE or A level results along with high value technical qualifications delivered via employer and university contextualised challenges that support high level technical and employability skills.
