Our plan
Most greenhouse gas emissions in Rotherham are not related to council activities. We know that we can’t achieve our goals alone, so we will aim to work alongside other organisations working in the borough. We will aim to engage with residents, businesses and community groups in the design of our plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across Rotherham. We will also aim to influence regional and national partners to support our work.
What we are doing
- We have worked with the Rotherham Together Partnership to develop the Rotherham Climate and Nature Charter. The charter gives businesses and other organisations the opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to tackling the climate and nature emergencies.
- We are engaged with regional and national partners including: South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority; South Yorkshire Sustainability Centre; Yorkshire and Humber Climate Change Commission; the Local Government Association and other groups at the local and regional level.
- We are a member of Rotherham Food Network, which aims to improve healthy eating and the sustainability of the food we eat in Rotherham.
- Through our social value policy we consider greenhouse gas emissions when we buy or commission products or services. This helps us make sure that we only work with businesses whose values match our own.
- We are training our staff to be Carbon Literate, meaning that our staff understand the climate crisis and how to tackle it. We are offering free Climate Literacy training to our community leaders and voluntary organisations.
- We are assessing all our decisions for their impact on our carbon emissions.
- We are working with local people who want to improve where they live through our Love Where You Live campaign. Find out more about how you can get involved in community clean ups and litter picks here.
- Our local Neighbourhood teams work closely with communities to take action to improve the local environment all over the borough. Find out more on your local ward’s page.
