Your responsibilities

All of the following must be disposed of as controlled waste:

  • Japanese knotweed
  • Giant hogwort
  • Himalayan balsam
  • Floating pennywort
  • Parrot’s feather
  • Creeping water primrose
  • New Zealand pigmyweed (also known as Australian swamp stonecrop)
  • Curly waterweed
  • Nuttall’s waterweed
  • Canadian pondweed
  • Water fern (also known as fairy fern)

It is the landowner's responsibility to control these plants but the landowner doesn't have to remove them.

You should not try to remove or dispose of them as it could cause the plant to spread, which is an offence.

If you are worried about invasive plants spreading from a neighbouring property, speak to the land owner in the first instance.
