Why sexual health matters
Sexual health is about more than avoiding infections or unplanned pregnancies — it’s about making informed choices, accessing regular check-ups, and feeling confident about your wellbeing. In Rotherham, free and confidential services are available to support your sexual health.
Why sexual health matters
Good sexual health includes:
- Regular testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
- Practising safer sex (e.g. using condoms)
- Accessing contraception and sexual health advice
Even if you have no symptoms or are in a long-term relationship, it’s recommended to have an STI test once a year.
You may need to test more often if:
- You’re sexually active and don’t have a regular partner (every 6 months)
- You have multiple sexual partners (every 3 months)
- You’re starting a new relationship and considering not using condoms
- You’ve had unprotected sex with someone whose STI status is unknown
- You notice symptoms such as discharge, rashes, or discomfort
