Oral health tips for children
- Start early: Visit the dentist when the first tooth appears (around 6 months), then go regularly.
- Free dental care: NHS dental care is free for children under 18 (or under 19 in full-time education), pregnant women and new mums. Find out more about who can get free NHS dental treatment or help with dental costs
- Make it fun: Keep dental visits positive. Fluoride varnish helps prevent tooth decay.
- Brush with help: Children under 7 should be supervised when brushing.
- Use the right toothpaste:
- Under 3s: a smear of fluoride toothpaste (1350–1500 ppm)
- Ages 3–6: a pea-sized amount
- Encourage spitting, not rinsing
- Limit sugar: Avoid sugary snacks and drinks between meals and at bedtime. Water and milk are best.
- Stick with it: If brushing is difficult, keep going—routine helps.
