Improving Rotherham's Leisure Economy

As works to revitalise and improve Rotherham Town Centre progress, it is important that investment into local centres is also made.

To begin to address this, the Council has committed £4 million to deliver improvements to local towns and villages across the borough. The scheme will run between 2021-2024.

The overall aim of the of the project is:

To work with neighbourhoods across the borough, to enhance their lived environment, through a variety of improvement projects, focused on public spaces and centres.

There are five objectives which the programme seeks to deliver:

  1. Improve the lived environment of all residents
  2. Enhance the visual appeal of neighbourhoods across the borough
  3. Inspire pride in our neighbourhoods
  4. Co-produce projects with neighbourhoods to deliver change that is needed
  5. Deliver on the priorities of wards and/ or wider masterplans

Progress to date

Local ward members, working with Neighbourhood Co-ordinators and local communities, have submitted details of suitable projects within their wards. We are now working with representatives from each ward to develop and agree detailed scheme designs.

The potential schemes submitted to date include projects such as:

  • the provision of car parking spaces
  • the creation of a community garden
  • accessibility improvements
  • the provision of a green link between a public park and a recreation ground
  • upgrading of surfacing, road markings and street furniture
