Towns and Villages Fund: Kilnhurst and Swinton East Ward

Site Selected

It is proposed that this scheme will make targeted public realm improvements along Rowms Lane and Bridge Street in Swinton.

Kilnhurst

Current Site Issues

The area has been chosen as it is a key gateway into Rotherham from Doncaster.

The scheme has been proposed to provide an improved arrival into the Borough and to generally enhance the appearance of the area, known locally as Swinton Bridge.

It is considered that the identified area currently has a tired and neglected appearance and has a somewhat industrial character.

Along this stretch of highway, a number of specific sites have been identified for targeted improvements through the Towns and Villages Fund. This includes the highway verge in which the “Welcome to Rotherham and “Swinton” signs are situated, the junctions of Talbot Road and Marriott Road and the community rockery fronting J Burley.

The identified area has a number of existing assets, such as mature trees, wide verges and accessibility to the canal and walking routes and it is hoped that the targeted improvements could work with these assets to uplift the appearance of the area for local residents, businesses and visitors.

Initial Proposals

The below map indicates the site area and highlights some of the potential interventions which could be carried out through the Towns and Villages Fund. This has been developed to assist pre-design consultation and we welcome any feedback on this or alternative ideas for the scheme in this area.

The initial proposals being considered include the provision of more impactful welcome signage, soft landscaping improvements across the area such as shrubs, bulbs, trees or wildflowers, replacement street furniture including knee rail and bollards. The proposals could also include elements of resurfacing and renewal of line markings.
