Tree Service

Our responsibility

We are responsible for council owned trees in streets, parks and open spaces, council houses and closed churchyards.

We inspect our trees periodically, to make sure they're in a safe and healthy condition. Our programme for inspections varies according the location and species.

Trees in gardens, or on other private land, are the responsibility of the owner. If a tree in a neighbouring property is causing you problems, you should take it up with the owner.

You have a right to prune any overhanging branches from council or privately owned trees back to the boundary of your property, unless it's a protected tree or you live in a conservation area, if you are usure we can check this for you. You'll be responsible for disposing of the prunings properly, either in your brown bin or at a household waste and recycling centre.

We are also responsible for:

  • the trees within council owned woodlands within the borough
  • the statutory protection of trees, mostly on privately owned land
  • advising on the development of land with trees present or where new trees are required
  • various types of tree work as specified on the downloadable Tree Management Protocol document
