Our responsibility
We are responsible for council owned trees in streets, parks and open spaces, council houses and closed churchyards.
We inspect our trees periodically, to make sure they're in a safe and healthy condition. Our programme for inspections varies according the location and species.
Trees in gardens, or on other private land, are the responsibility of the owner. If a tree in a neighbouring property is causing you problems, you should take it up with the owner.
You have a right to prune any overhanging branches from council or privately owned trees back to the boundary of your property, unless it's a protected tree or you live in a conservation area, if you are usure we can check this for you. You'll be responsible for disposing of the prunings properly, either in your brown bin or at a household waste and recycling centre.
We are also responsible for:
- the trees within council owned woodlands within the borough
- the statutory protection of trees, mostly on privately owned land
- advising on the development of land with trees present or where new trees are required
- various types of tree work as specified on the downloadable Tree Management Protocol document
