WalkSafe App now available in Rotherham

Teams from Rotherham Council and South Yorkshire Police launched the new WalkSafe App in Rotherham town centre on earlier this month.

WalkSafe is a free app which allows users to share their location with selected people for set periods of time or specific journeys.

Residents will now be able to download and use the app to see local venues which have implemented safety initiatives and measures in Rotherham and across South Yorkshire.

Residents can download the app from their preferred App store or go online here. There are a number of settings available, ensuring that the user is in complete control of how they use the app.

Rotherham Council’s Assistant Director for Community Safety and Street Scene, Sam Barstow, said: “One of the Council’s priorities is to make sure everyone is able to live safer, healthier lives and introducing the WalkSafe app is one of the many things we are doing to help our residents feel safer in the communities.

“It is important that everyone is able to enjoy our town centres without fear for their safety, whether they are here in the daytime with friends or travelling alone at night. The WalkSafe app gives that reassurance, and control, to all its users.”

Last week, Rotherham Council committed to investing £570,000 to launch its new Street Safe Team. This uniformed team will focus on increasing safety in the town centre and key areas across the borough, such as Dinnington, Wath, Maltby and Swinton.

The Council has also been promoting other schemes to businesses, such as Ask Angela, to provide safer spaces for residents during nights out.
