A new town centre health hub, including a pharmacy, could open in the town centre next year as Rotherham Council explores options to bring a new health offer to its high street.
When it meets on 7 July, the Council’s Cabinet is set to approve proposals for the refurbishment of the former Boots building on Effingham Street, which is currently vacant.
If approved, the Council will refurbish the building with a view to relocating Abbey Pharmacy, currently housed in the indoor market, to the site in early 2026.
Following the proposed relocation of the pharmacy, the Council will work with health partners and open consultation to explore the implementation of a further health offer, which could include GP related services or other health and wellbeing providers, like dentists.
The pharmacy is set to relocate as work on the new market progresses. The Effingham Street health hub would offer a site close to its existing location, meaning minimal impact for its customers.
The Council continues to explore options for health on the high street following the success of the offer in other towns, leading to an increase in footfall and a reduction of missed appointments.
Cllr John Williams, Cabinet Member for Transport, Jobs and the Local Economy, said: "Our plans for a new town centre health hub are an exciting opportunity to breathe new life into a vacant building on Effingham Street, while also putting vital health services where they are most accessible - right on our high street.
“Relocating Abbey Pharmacy to this more prominent location is the first step. We’ll be working closely with our NHS and health partners to explore further services that could be offered from the site, including GP services, dentists, or other wellbeing providers. It’s all part of our vision to create a revitalised, thriving town centre that works for everyone.”
