Rotherham Council’s Cabinet is set to approve plans to invest £600,000 to improve five community buildings across the borough over the next two years when they meet on 15 September 2025.
The Black Hut, Oaklea Retreat, Clifton Learning Centre, The Meeting Place (Wingfield), and Artworks (Brook Hill) will receive funding to modernise and repair their buildings and facilities.
Each of these are pillars of their communities and provide activities such as youth clubs, healthy eating clubs, community meetings, sports and recreation activities for various groups, centres for adults with learning disabilities and Autism, Friends Groups and Local History Groups.
Since the Covid-19 pandemic, there has been an increase in use of these buildings which has had an impact on the general wear and tear, leaving them in need for repair.
Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance and Safe and Clean Communities, Cllr Saghir Alam, said: “Our community centres and facilities are at the heart of communities and offer residents essential support and activities that ensure they remain connected with each other and the wider borough. They provide a place for people to meet socially, to get information or support, or learn key skills for their future.
“I am delighted at this commitment to our community centres, and I know this funding will give our key community facilities some much needed TLC so that residents are able to enjoy them for much longer.”
The funding was approved by cabinet in the Budget and Council Tax Report 2025/26 where up to £600,000 in capital funding to invest in community facilities was allocated.
