New film encourages residents to help a child achieve their dreams by becoming a foster carer

The Run is a new short film to inspire individuals and families who are considering fostering to become foster carers and make a real difference to the lives of local children and young people.

To celebrate the launch of The Run, Rotherham Council and Fostering Rotherham invited the borough’s foster families, children in care, and local partners to the premiere of the film at Forge Island’s Arc Cinema on Thursday 9th October 2025.

Supported by over 100 councils across England, The Run tells the story of a 14-year-old child in care, Tom who, with the right care and guidance, turns his habit of running late into a positive achievement.

There are many children in Rotherham, like Tom in the film, who are in need of a safe and loving home so they can reach their potential and achieve their dreams.

The Council is urging caring individuals or families to consider fostering, whether they’ve thought about fostering before or never contemplated it. As the film shows, opening a home to a child can be a positive and life-changing experience, for both the carer and the child.

Cabinet Member for Children and Young People at Rotherham Council, Cllr Victoria Cusworth added: “The Run is a really inspiring story which shows the huge impact having the right foster family at the right time can have. I really loved Tom’s story, how having that simple connection as well as love and support can have a real impact on his life.

“We have an amazing fostering community in Rotherham who tell us fostering is one of the most rewarding things you can do. This film will help us reach more people in the borough and the surrounding area and encourage them to take that step to become part of this incredibly important community.”

Foster carers play a vital role in nurturing and guiding children through challenging times. If you feel inspired to foster a local child by this film, please get in touch for more information. Go online to www.fosteringrotherham.com or call 01709 357370.
