Thousands of Residents Missing Out on Pension Credit Income

Council news

Latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions reveal that approximately 2,300 eligible residents in Rotherham may not be claiming Pension Credit.

A vital financial support for older people on low incomes, Pension Credit is designed to top up weekly income to a guaranteed minimum level - currently £227.10 for single people and £346.60 for couples. It can also unlock access to a wide range of additional support, including:

  • Housing Benefit for renters
  • Council Tax discounts
  • Winter Fuel Payments
  • Free TV licences for those aged 75+
  • Help with NHS costs, including dental treatment, glasses, and transport
  • Warm Home Discount Scheme
  • Support for Mortgage Interest
  • Royal Mail redirection discounts for those moving home

Eligible pensioners may also receive extra help if they are carers, severely disabled, or responsible for a child or young person. Pension Credit is available even to those with other income, savings, or who own their home.

Check your eligibility today using the official Pension Credit calculator.

Cllr Joanna Baker-Rogers, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council said:

“Far too many older residents in Rotherham are missing out on vital financial support that could make a real difference to their daily lives. That’s why the Council has committed funding to trusted local partners to ensure people get the help they need to claim Pension Credit and access the wider support it unlocks.

“We urge anyone who thinks they might be eligible to reach out and check. This is about dignity, security, and making sure no one is left behind.”
