Rotherham Council encourages residents to ‘Spot the Signs’ during Safeguarding Awareness Week

Safeguarding Week 2025

The Council is encouraging residents to learn how to spot the signs of abuse, neglect and exploitation as part of Safeguarding Awareness Week 2025, taking place from Monday 17 to Friday 21 November.

Safeguarding is about protecting children and adults from harm and that starts with recognising when something isn’t right. Abuse can take many forms, including domestic, financial, sexual, criminal or online exploitation, and it isn’t always easy to see.

Throughout the week, the Council will be sharing information across its social media channels to help residents recognise the signs of abuse, neglect and exploitation. Each day will focus on a different type of abuse with signposts to support services that can help people act if they’re worried about someone.

Signs might include unexplained injuries, sudden changes in behaviour, poor hygiene, missing belongings, or someone becoming withdrawn or unusually anxious. Spotting these signs early can help protect someone vulnerable and get them the support they need.

Alongside this, a programme of learning events will run for professionals and volunteers working in adult and children’s services. These sessions will explore how to build safer cultures in workplaces and communities, and how to take action when something doesn’t feel right.

Councillor Victoria Cusworth, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People’s Services, said: “We are determined that every child has the best start in life in Rotherham, and every adult to feel safe and well. Safeguarding is at the heart of making that happen.

“Children may not always be able to speak up when something’s wrong and that’s why it’s so important that adults know how to spot the signs. Safeguarding Awareness Week is a reminder that we all have a part to play in keeping children safe.”

Councillor Joanna Baker-Rogers, Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health, added: “Safeguarding is about people knowing what to look out for and feeling confident to speak up.

“Whether it’s a neighbour, a friend or a relative, recognising the signs of abuse or neglect could be the first step in helping someone get the support they need.”
