Rotherham Council is teaming up with schools across the borough to put in place social distancing measures in time for the new academic year.
Temporary changes outside Bramley and Sunnyside Junior and Infants School will be put in place to help children and their parents and guardians to social distance safely at drop off and pick up times.
The parking bay directly outside the school entrance on Flanderwell Lane will be closed off to allow pedestrians to social distance safely. However, parking across the road will still be available.
Rotherham Council’s Interim Head of Transport Infrastructure, Andrew Moss, said: “One of our priorities is making sure that children and their carers feel safe when going to school and we are supporting schools to put measures in place. Since the coronavirus lockdown began, we have seen that people’s travelling habits have changed and many more families are choosing to walk or cycle places. These measures will support these new habits, while also taking into account those families who need to use vehicles to get to school.
“We ask that if any schools have any requests or questions about footways or social distancing to get in touch with our team so we can support them.”
Since March, the Council has been working put in place a number of social distancing measures to help pedestrians and commuters access their workplace, shops and other facilities safely.
In the town centre, the Council introduced a path widening scheme on Corporation Street outside Wilkinsons and Costa to support residents to social distance. Over the next few weeks, these measures will be reinforced with sturdier barriers.
Rotherham Council’s Cabinet member for transport, Cllr Denise Lelliott, said: “I would like to thank residents for their support so far for doing their part in controlling the virus in Rotherham. We appreciate the closures may cause some disruptions, but the measures are temporary and have been designed to have as little impact as possible.”
