Rotherham Borough Council's response to Department of Education announcementPublished Tuesday, 7th October 2014
The government has announced it is to appoint a Children's Social Care Commissioner to oversee children's and young people's services in Rotherham, for an initial period of three months.
Responding to this announcement, Rotherham Borough Council has issued the following statements:
Cllr Emma Hoddinott, Deputy Leader of Rotherham Borough Council, said: “We welcome the appointment of Malcolm Newsam, the Children's Social Care Commissioner for three months in the first instance. This has clearly been a difficult time for Children's Services in Rotherham. However, we are determined to take all the necessary action to ensure the standard of services that Rotherham's children deserve.”
Martin Kimber, Chief Executive of Rotherham Borough Council, said: “The Council welcomes the additional expertise and external guidance which the Commissioner will bring. We are already taking steps to appoint a new Chief Executive and Director of Children’s Services, who will both work closely with the Commissioner, and have established an Improvement Board to provide external advice, challenge and support.”
