Older people and their relatives are being warned to beware of bogus callers who may be operating in the borough.

Age UK Rotherham has issued a warning that there may be people in the Rotherham area who are calling at older people’s homes claiming to be from the charity and offering to check that older people are getting all their benefit and other entitlements.

Lesley Dabell, Age UK Rotherham’s Chief Executive, said: "Although Age UK Rotherham does provide a benefits checking service this is done on an appointment only basis.

"We never cold call at any older person’s home. All Age UK Rotherham workers carry identification and wear a badge. We encourage all older people to insist on checking the identity of anyone who knocks on their door to make sure they are who they say they are, wherever they say they are from.

"If you are unsure if someone is genuinely from Age UK Rotherham you should always contact us to check that it is a member of our staff. Our staff are never offended by being asked for their identification or by a call being made to our office to check."

If you or someone you know wants to check that a caller is a genuine Age UK Rotherham member of staff please call 01709 835214 between 9.30am and 4pm Monday to Friday.
