More funding for transport and road improvements across the borough

Rotherham Council’s cabinet is set to approve plans to invest around £13 million into roads and footpaths and almost £2 million for transport improvements over the next year.

As part of the Council’s “£24m to 2024” roads programme, through 2021/2022 £7.3 million will be used on 154 roads across the borough with £1.3 million spent on 10 A roads, £2.1 million spent on 25 B and C roads and £3.9 million spent on 119 unclassified roads.

In 2020/2021, the Council has repaired 271 roads equating to 48.6 miles and an area of nearly 507,800 square metres.

£1.875 million is also set to be used throughout 2021/2022 for the transport capital programme.

£678,000 will be spent on local safety schemes.

In addition, three structural schemes have been identified for delivery in 2021-22.

These schemes are:

• Manvers Footbridge structural painting (£350,000)

• West Bawtry Road embankment collapse (£300,000)

• Steadfolds Lane embankment collapse (£225,000)

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Jobs and Local Economy, Cllr Denise Lelliott, said: “This is a substantial investment aimed at improving roads and footpaths across the borough. Everyone depends on this infrastructure in some way whether they are driving, walking or cycling and it’s vital that work is carried to make sure our roads and footpaths are maintained.”

Rotherham Council’s Cabinet Member for Waste, Roads & Community Safety, Cllr Emma Hoddinott, added: “ This additional investment in Rotherham’s roads is making a real improvement to the highway network and we can see that the number of reported potholes has reduced year on year.

“We know that there is still more to do which is why last year we invested an additional £24 million of funding over four years to 2024 to further reduce the number of potholes by half.”

The proposals will go before the Council’s Cabinet on Monday 22nd March.
